Props Storemen start work two to four weeks prior to the shoot, working with Property Masters*, production buyers, and props drivers. Immediately before the shoot, Props Storemen liaise with the Dressing and Standby Props teams.
Props Storemen organise the collection, transport and delivery of all hired or bought-in props. They set up the pick-up points, noting the size of the props to be collected. They create transport schedules that fit in with shooting schedules. If the props for pick-up are too large to be dealt with by the Props Driver alone, additional drivers and vehicles are booked.
Props Storemen also work with Property Masters to review the Dressing Props scheduled for each day. They decide whether more crew should be hired. Once the props arrive, Props Storemen check off the delivery and make sure all props are in good condition. If any props are missing or damaged, Storemen contact the Hire Company for replacements.
Props Storemen help with unpacking the props, working with the Dressing Props team. On smaller budget productions they also help with the dressing work. Props Storemen also collect hand props for Actors, and any items especially created by Prop Makers.
After ascertaining which props are needed, for which scenes, and in what order, Props Storemen organise them into groups, ready for the Standby Props team. Props Storemen are also responsible for the receipt and care of any product placement goods used.
Once filming is over, Props Storemen oversee the striking of the set, listing each prop as it is returned. If there is any loss or damage, it is the Storeman's responsibility to inform the Hire Company and the Property Master. If props are being used at more than one location, Props Storemen check them to see if they are fit for purpose, and store them safely.
After the shoot, Props Storemen return props to hire companies. They make sure the production office has copies of all documentation. They also liaise with production buyers to organise the sale of any bought props at the end of the shoot.
